Our criterias were something along the lines of: new, exciting and \u2013 if possible \u2013 also cheap. A short trip to Sofia, Bulgaria is what we decided on. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sofia combines two things that are very close to our hearts: Nature in the backyard and an exciting cityscape. This article is about the excursion to the Vitosha. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sofia, the Bulgarian capital is situated directly at the foot of the Vitosha (\u0412\u0438\u0442\u043e\u0448\u0430) mountain range. The Cherni Vrah (\u0427\u0435\u0440\u043d\u0438 \u0432\u0440\u044a\u0445) is the highest peak of the mountain range at an altitude of 2290 m. Just look for it, if you\u2019re lost. No matter where you are, you can always see the mountain to the South of the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Why make an excursion to the Vitosha?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Fantastic View and Recreation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the top of the mountain you have a fantastic view of the city and the surrounding mountain chains. The air is fresh and in addition we had the best weather, when we visited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Sports<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t care about nature, fresh air and panoramic views? For real? All right. But maybe you\u2019re interested in sports? For both skiing and hiking, it\u2019s worth taking a trip to the Vitosha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Winter sports area<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 12 ski slopes with a total length of 29 km. Of these, 6 slopes are easy, 5 medium and one difficult. You\u2019ll also find a beginner\u2019s slope for children and sleds.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rent your equipment on site or just bring it with you. Furthermore there\u2019s a ski &amp; snowboard school and a ski &amp; snowboard service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Hiking<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We visited Bulgaria in winter. At this time of year, hiking wasn\u2019t exactly easy. That\u2019s why we didn\u2019t make it very far. In the summer, however, the mountains is said to offer some great hiking trails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re lucky, you\u2019ll meet wild goats on your way. And if you\u2019re exhausted, you can rest in mountain huts. On the one hand, because it was cheap and on the other hand, because we simply found very little detailed information on how to get to Vitosha.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s go: We took the train, the bus and the lift to the mountain. Take either the red or the blue <\/span><b>metro line<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the direction of Mladost \/ Sofia Business Park or Airport from the city center. Get off at the stop <\/span><b>G.M. Dimitrov<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u0413. \u041c. \u0414\u0438\u043c\u0438\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0432) and take <\/span><b>bus 123<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the direction you come from, you have to look to your right or your left for the bus. Look for the Boulevard &#8220;Doctor G. M. Dimitrov&#8221; (\u0431\u0443\u043b. &#8220;\u0414\u043e\u043a\u0442\u043e\u0440 \u0413. \u041c. \u0414\u0438\u043c\u0438\u0442\u0440\u043e\u0432&#8221;) and then you\u2019ll find the station. Take the bus to the last stop &#8220;Lift Simeonovo&#8221; (\u043b\u0438\u0444\u0442\u0430 \u0441\u0438\u043c\u0435\u043e\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0430). You have to get your bus tickets from the driver, who in our experience speaks little to no English. A ride costs 1.6\u043b\u0432, which is roughly \u20ac0.80 \/ $0.9.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take some change with you, as the bus driver doesn\u2019t necessarily have enough change. After your purchase, you only have to validate the tickets. To do this, place the arrow side of your ticket in the small yellow machines and push the lever up with force.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike on the train, the next stop in the bus is not announced or displayed. Therefore you should know that the trip to Vitosha (about 30 minutes) takes longer than the return journey (about 20 minutes). \ud83d\ude09<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Leg of The Journey<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you arrive at the final stop, the last part of the trip is still to come: the lift. The tickets for a round trip are 10 \u043b\u0432 each and the journey to the mountain takes approx. half an hour. If it\u2019s not a busy time, you\u2019ll get a gondola for yourself and enjoy the view and the ride in peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the ride to the top the gondola makes two stops. Get off and on again, if you want to. Since we didn\u2019t have much time, we went straight to the last station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>In summary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metro to G.M. Dimitrov (1.6 \u043b\u0432\/person\/one-way)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bus 123 to Lift Simeonovo (1.6 \u043b\u0432\/person\/one-way)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lift to the top (5 \u043b\u0432\/person\/one-way)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Alternative routes to Vitosha:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All roads lead to Rome. Would you like to travel by taxi, your own car or by bus? That won\u2019t be a problem. In addition it\u2019ll be very cheap. We just didn\u2019t test it ourselves. Stay informed on the weather and get dressed accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We went on our hike on the mountain and enjoyed the fresh air and the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Amenities on the Vitosha<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a restaurant? And a restroom? The most important things ahead: There <\/span><b>is<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a toilet. It\u2019ll cost a small fee to use. Only after you\u2019ve paid, you\u2019ll get toilet paper. So you really should pay the fee. Otherwise, you\u2019ll later have a problem (depending on what your plan was).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the restaurant: There is one directly at the lift station. It has a panorama deck, too! Ideal for eating something after a hike and relaxing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are your experiences?
